Raymundo's Family
Raymundo, Ana-Sofia (12), Georgiana, Andres (9), Teresa (15) and Pedro (17)
Raymundo and his family have been working in the dump for about 15 years, collecting tyres, plastic bottles, aluminium, clothes, old shoes, crockery – anything and everything that can be reused or resold. All six of them used to work in the dump full time, but in the past five years, the children have been able to go to school thanks to Safe Passage.
"The change is already so obvious", says Georgiana, "Thank God the children will have a different life to us. They have a future."
Raymundo has diabetes and heart disease, and was deafened during a shooting a few years ago, so he can't work in the dump itself. Now, Sofia collects the rubbish with Pedro while Raymundo sorts, washes and prepares the salvaged goods for sale. Between them they make around Q300 (£25) per week.
